OUR PEOPLE

Jude Villa

It all started with a small brown pick-up truck, a lawn mower and a bunch of tools Jude borrowed from her grandfather in 1980. It was going to be a sideline, but not only did the business take off, Jude quickly approached her work as a way to enhance balance and harmony in the land she was tending.

By 1990, she incorporated what was then a small lawn and garden business as Working Earth Organic Gardening & Landscaping. Today, Working Earth is a full-service design, construction and maintenance company dedicated to giving customers sustainable results that respect and strengthen the precious Island environment.

Want to get a feel for how serious Jude is about what's around us? She's a certified Tree Ambassador and completed a course in Tree Whispering. She is also a NOFA accredited land-scape professional and Working Earth practices their organic standards. She recently completed a four-part course in geomancy (interpreting the lines or texture on the ground) and dowsing to expand her connection to the land and elements.

For Jude, it's also about her customers and her team. Meet any Working Earth team member on your project, and you'll find most of them have been with her for years. It's a big reason why customers have come to rely on the high standard of Working Earth service.

But this is the Vineyard, which means even in the height of the summer, there's time for life. For Jude, that means chairing the rowing program for Sail MV, and playing drums on the beach every summer for the Camp Jabberwocky gang.

Andrew Kelly

When Andrew pulls up in your driveway, you'll notice the Edgartown Fire Department decal on his bumper. An officer with the all-volunteer department, he also serves as a certified Emergency Medical Technician.

Andrew and Jude have been a formidable team at Working Earth for more than 15 years. With a degree in Landscape Contracting, Andrew gives every project both a fresh eye and a seasoned approach. He is the company's operational manager, a licensed pesticide applicator and regularly attends courses throughout the year to stay ahead of the curve in the industry.

Finally, because of his commitment to maintaining public access to Vineyard trails, beaches and vistas, Andrew is a member of the Martha's Vineyard Land Bank Advisory Board.

Rebecca Brown Project Manager and Designer

Rebecca was born and raised on the Island. She grew up on a farm in Edgartown and studied Environmental Science in College and minored in Sustainable Agriculture and Soil Management. She has spent most the last 20 years (a few years were spent working for Working Earth) working as an organic farm systems designer and a soil and fertilizer consultant throughout New England. She also developed two land rehabilitation companies that utilize goat grazing. Craving a more balanced and creative lifestyle, in 2017 she moved back to the Vineyard to re-join the Working Earth team. She brings her deep knowledge of regenerative land care and management of soil systems. She is a certified Organic Land Care Professional with NOFA (Northeast Organic Farmer’s Association).
